Samādhibhāvanāsuttaṃ
'These four, almsmen, cultivations of concentration. Which four?
1) It exists, almsmen, a cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to a happy dwelling having viewed the principle.
2) It exists, almsmen, a cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to the acquisition of knowledge by viewing.
3) It exists, almsmen, a cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to meditative awareness.
4) It exists, almsmen, a cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to barrenness of drainings.
And which, almsman, cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to a happy dwelling having viewed the principle?
Here, almsmen, an almsman is just withdrawing from lusts ... first radiance ... second radiance .... third radiance ... he dwells having obtained the fourth radiance. This, almsmen, cultivation of concentration, when made much of, leads to dwell happily having viewed the principle.
And which, almsmen, cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to acquisition of knowledge by viewing?
Here, almsmen, an almsman pays attention to the perception of light, he looks after the perception of the day. As from day, like that the night. As night like that from the day. Thus with openness of mind, by not covered up, the mind cultivates with shining. This, almsmen, cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to the acquisition of knowledge by viewing.
And which, almsmen, cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to meditative awareness?
Here, almsmen, feelings to an almsman are found out as they arise, found out as they do attend, found out as they go on as a cloud in settlement. ... perceptions ... thoughts ... This, almsmen, cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made a lot of, leads to meditative awareness.
And which, almsmen, cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made much of, leads to barrenness of drainings?
Here, almsmen, an almsman on the five masses plus the taking up dwells looking at the going up plus the going away: 'Thus, form. Thus, rise of form. Thus, settling down of form ... feeling ... perception ... inclinations ... cognition.' This, almsmen, cultivation of concentration, when cultivated, when made a lot of, leads to barrenness of drainings.
OK these, almsmen, four cultivations of concentration. And this was yet by me, almsmen, put together, a talk to across the goal, concerning Puṇṇaka's question.
For counting on the other plus the others in the world,
on what is stirred, it does not exist anywhere in the world;
Existing is the smokeless, trouble free, hungerless,
as he crossed over birth plus ageing thus, I say.'
